Debate Rebuttal Timer
Academic debate formats use strict time limits enforced by a visible timer. Rebuttal speeches are typically 2 minutes in Lincoln-Douglas and Parliamentary formats, 1.5–2 minutes in Public Forum debate. This timer provides a 2-minute countdown with a 30-second warning to signal the speaker's final argument phase. The large display allows the timekeeper, judge, and speaker to monitor time simultaneously without disrupting the flow of argument.
Two minutes is calibrated for the rebuttal speech function: long enough to address the opposing team's key arguments and crystallize the round narrative, but short enough to require priority decisions rather than comprehensive response to every argument. This time pressure teaches debaters to weigh impacts and identify voting issues — one of the core skills that distinguishes experienced from novice competitive debaters.
