Fact fluency drills — the mad minute and its variants — give students a fixed short window to answer as many number facts as they can. The aim is automatic recall: freeing working memory from calculating 7 × 8 so it can be spent on the problem that required it.
One minute is short enough to sustain full effort and short enough to run daily without consuming a lesson. Longer drills measure stamina and concentration as much as recall, which is not what they are for. The daily repetition matters more than the length — five one-minute drills across a week beat a single five-minute session.
Compete against your own last score
Timed drills go wrong when they become public competition. A student who is slow at recall is not helped by being visibly slowest, and for anxious students timed maths can build an aversion that outlasts the fluency it was meant to create.
Have students record their own score and compare it only to their own previous one. Progress is then visible to the student who needs to see it and invisible to everyone else, which keeps the activity motivating rather than exposing.
Fluency is not the same as understanding
A student can recall multiplication facts quickly without understanding what multiplication is, and drilling will not supply the understanding. Fluency work sits alongside conceptual teaching rather than replacing it.
The reverse is also true: a student who understands multiplication perfectly well can still be slowed by having to derive every fact. Both matter, and neither substitutes for the other.
Which facts to drill, and in what order
Drilling everything at once produces slow progress on all of it. Working one fact family at a time — the fives, then the tens, then the twos — gives visible mastery quickly, and visible mastery is what keeps a reluctant student going.
Mix previously mastered families back in periodically rather than retiring them. Recall decays without use, and a student who was fluent in their threes in October will not be by March if they never see them again.
Commonly cited teaching benchmarks rather than measured standards. Useful for spotting a student who needs support; not a target to rank a class against.
