Diluted bleach solutions are used as household disinfectants, with the required contact time depending on the dilution and the intended use. As with every disinfectant, the surface must remain visibly wet for the full stated time — and the specific dilution and time come from the product label, which differs between bleach concentrations.
Five minutes is a common figure for a general-purpose diluted solution. Stronger dilutions can work in less time; weaker ones need more. Because household bleach is sold at several concentrations, a dilution ratio copied from the internet may produce a solution that is far stronger or weaker than intended.
Never mix bleach with anything
Bleach mixed with ammonia produces chloramine gas. Bleach mixed with acids — including vinegar and many limescale and toilet cleaners — produces chlorine gas. Both send people to hospital every year, and both happen most often by accident rather than by deliberate mixing.
The accidental route is using two products in sequence in a small space, or applying bleach to a surface still wet with another cleaner. Some ammonia is also present in urine, which makes bleach in a toilet a real scenario rather than a theoretical one. Rinse and ventilate between products, and if you notice a sharp smell, leave the room and open the windows.
Diluted bleach degrades within a day
A diluted bleach solution loses effectiveness relatively quickly — commonly considered good for around twenty-four hours. A spray bottle mixed last month is not a disinfectant, whatever the label on it says.
Light and heat accelerate the degradation, so a bottle stored on a sunny windowsill degrades faster still. Mixing fresh for each session is the standard advice and it is one of the more commonly ignored ones.
Where bleach is not the right tool
Bleach damages many surfaces — it corrodes metals, discolours grout and stone, and ruins fabrics. It is also unnecessary for routine cleaning, where detergent does the job without the risks.
