Disinfectants require a contact time — also called dwell time — during which the surface must stay visibly wet with the product for it to work as tested. Spraying and immediately wiping does not disinfect; it cleans. The required time is stated on the product label and it is the authoritative figure for that product.
Ten minutes covers many common household disinfectants, but the range across product classes is wide and the specific number is on your bottle. Labels for a given class commonly specify times in the ranges below, and a product that says four minutes needs four minutes of visible wetness, not four minutes of having been sprayed.
Wet is the requirement, not elapsed time
The contact time assumes the surface remains visibly wet throughout. On a warm day, on a porous surface, or with a light spray, a product can dry in two minutes when it needs ten — in which case the remaining eight minutes achieve nothing.
The practical response is to apply enough product, and to reapply if the surface dries before the time is up. That is a common instruction on labels and it is routinely ignored.
Clean first, then disinfect
Disinfectants are much less effective on visibly dirty surfaces, because organic matter physically shields microbes and can inactivate the active ingredient. Cleaning to remove soil and then disinfecting is a two-step process, and combined products still generally require both passes.
For most household purposes plain cleaning with detergent is sufficient, and disinfecting is worth reserving for situations that call for it — food preparation surfaces after raw meat, or a household with illness. Routine disinfection of every surface is not necessary and contributes to unnecessary chemical exposure.
Never mix products
Combining cleaning products can produce dangerous gases — bleach with ammonia and bleach with acids being the two that cause emergency room visits every year. This includes mixing indirectly, by using one product on a surface still wet with another.
