Gel polish cures by photoinitiators reacting to a specific wavelength of light. LED lamps typically cure a layer in thirty to sixty seconds; older UV lamps take around two minutes. The gel and the lamp must be compatible — a gel formulated for LED wavelengths may not cure properly under a UV lamp and vice versa.
The cure time comes from the gel manufacturer, not from the lamp. Using a different brand's timing, or eyeballing it, produces undercured gel, which is the cause of most gel manicure problems including peeling, chipping and skin sensitisation.
Undercured gel is the root of most problems
Gel that has not fully cured stays partially liquid at a molecular level. It peels and lifts early, and — more importantly — uncured monomers in contact with skin are a known cause of allergic sensitisation, which once developed can be permanent and can rule out gel products entirely.
That is the reason to follow the manufacturer's cure time exactly rather than approximately, and to avoid getting gel on the surrounding skin in the first place.
Lamps degrade and thin coats matter
UV bulbs lose output over time and need replacing on the manufacturer's schedule; an old lamp curing at the stated time is still undercuring. LED lamps last far longer but are not immortal.
Coat thickness matters just as much. A thick layer does not cure through, however long it sits under the lamp, because the upper layer absorbs the light. Thin layers, cured individually, is the only reliable method.
Hand position and UV exposure
All four fingers need to be flat and fully inside the lamp, and thumbs are usually cured separately because they do not sit at the same angle. A thumb cured at the edge of the lamp is a thumb that chips first.
On UV exposure to the hands: the concern is widely discussed and the practical mitigations are simple — fingerless UV-protective gloves or sunscreen on the hands before a session. Given that sessions are short but repeated over years, it is a reasonable precaution rather than an alarmist one.
