UV resin cures on demand under a lamp rather than over hours, which is its whole advantage over epoxy. Cure time depends on layer thickness, lamp wattage and how transparent the resin is — clear resin cures deeper than heavily pigmented or opaque resin, which blocks the light from reaching the lower layers.
Two minutes suits a thin layer under a typical hobby lamp. The critical constraint is layer thickness rather than time: past roughly three to five millimetres, the upper layer absorbs the UV and the resin below stays liquid no matter how long the lamp runs.
Build in thin layers
The reliable method is pouring two to three millimetres, curing fully, then pouring the next layer. It is slower in wall-clock terms than a single deep pour and it is the only way to get a solid result.
A piece with a cured shell and liquid centre looks finished and fails later — cracking, leaking, or staying permanently soft. That failure usually appears days after the piece seemed complete, which makes it particularly annoying.
The tack-free test
Cured UV resin should be tack-free when touched with a gloved finger. A slightly sticky surface usually means either insufficient cure time or oxygen inhibition, where air contact prevents the very top layer from curing properly.
Curing in sunlight for a further period, or covering the surface during cure, both address oxygen inhibition. If the resin is soft rather than merely tacky, the problem is depth or lamp output, not the surface.
Lamps and pigment
A higher-wattage lamp cures faster and deeper, but it does not overcome the thickness limit. Nail lamps work for small pieces and are underpowered for anything substantial; dedicated resin lamps or sunlight handle larger work.
Pigment and opacity matter as much as thickness. Heavily pigmented resin blocks UV, so an opaque piece needs thinner layers than a clear one of the same size — often half the depth per pour.
