Epoxy has three distinct times that get confused. Pot life is how long the mixed resin stays workable in the mixing container. Working time is how long you have once it is poured out and spread thinner. Cure time is how long until it is hard, and full cure — reaching final strength — takes far longer than being touch-hard.
Thirty minutes is a common pot life for a general-purpose casting resin, and it is not a promise. Pot life is measured under specific conditions at a specific mass, and both temperature and volume change it substantially — which is why a resin that behaved yesterday can go off in ten minutes today.
Mass and temperature shorten pot life sharply
The epoxy reaction is exothermic — it generates heat — and heat accelerates the reaction. A large mass in a deep container retains that heat and can accelerate into a runaway cure, going from liquid to hot solid in minutes and sometimes smoking or cracking.
Pouring into a wider, shallower container extends working time by letting the heat escape. So does working in a cooler room. Mixing a large batch in a deep cup and then wondering why it seized is the classic beginner failure.
Measure by weight or volume as the manufacturer specifies
Epoxy ratios are not approximate. Some products are mixed by weight and some by volume, and the two are not interchangeable because resin and hardener have different densities. Using the wrong one produces resin that never fully cures.
Undercured resin stays tacky indefinitely and cannot be fixed by waiting. The only remedy is removing it and starting again, which is why the two minutes spent checking the ratio and mixing thoroughly — including the sides and bottom of the cup — is the best-value time in the whole process.
Ventilation and skin contact
Work in a ventilated space and wear nitrile gloves. Epoxy sensitisation is a real occupational hazard — repeated skin contact can produce an allergy that develops over time and then rules out working with epoxy at all.
