Film development times are set by the developer, the film, the dilution and the temperature together. C-41 colour processing is standardised — three minutes fifteen seconds in developer at 38 °C — which is what makes colour film consistent across labs. Black and white has no single standard because every film and developer pair has its own time.
The C-41 developer step is short and temperature-critical: at 38 °C a deviation of half a degree produces a visible colour shift, which is why colour processing uses a water bath and a thermometer rather than a room-temperature approach. Black and white at 20 °C is far more forgiving of a degree either way.
Black and white times come from the chart, not from a page
There is no universal black and white developing time. HP5 in ID-11 at 1+1 is a different time from HP5 in Rodinal at 1+50, and both differ again if pushed. The Massive Dev Chart is the standard reference and it exists precisely because the combinations are too numerous to memorise.
Push and pull processing changes the time again — pushing a stop typically means a substantial increase in development time, at the cost of contrast and grain. Look up the specific combination rather than adapting a number from a similar film.
Agitation is part of the time
A development time assumes a specific agitation scheme, commonly continuous for the first thirty seconds then a few inversions every minute. Changing the agitation changes the effective development, so a correct time with the wrong agitation gives a wrong result.
Consistent agitation matters more than any particular scheme. Pick one, use it every time, and your results become comparable — which is what lets you adjust a time deliberately rather than guessing at why one roll differs from another.
Temperature discipline in colour
C-41 at 38 °C needs the chemistry, the tank and the film all at temperature, which usually means a water bath and checking with a thermometer rather than trusting a kettle. A cold tank pulls the developer temperature down within seconds of pouring.
Some C-41 kits offer lower-temperature options with longer times. They are more forgiving of temperature drift and generally less consistent than the standard process, which is a reasonable trade for occasional home development.
