Wood glue has two times that matter: clamp time, after which the clamps can come off without the joint moving, and full cure, after which the joint reaches its final strength. For PVA these are commonly around thirty minutes and twenty-four hours respectively — a factor of nearly fifty between them.
Thirty minutes of clamping is enough to hold a well-fitted joint in place while the glue develops initial strength. It is not enough to plane, machine or stress the joint, and the most common woodworking mistake with glue is treating clamp time as done time.
Open time is the constraint on complex glue-ups
Open time — how long you have between spreading glue and closing the joint — is often shorter than people expect, around five to ten minutes for standard PVA. A complex assembly with a dozen joints can exceed it while you are still fitting parts.
The standard responses are a dry run first with the clamps set to length, an extended open time glue for large assemblies, or breaking the glue-up into stages. Discovering the problem with glue already on the wood is the situation to avoid.
Temperature changes everything
PVA glues have a minimum application temperature, commonly around 10 °C, below which they do not form a proper bond and the joint fails later even though it looked fine. A cold workshop in winter is a real cause of mysterious joint failures.
Cold also lengthens both open time and clamp time. Warmer conditions shorten open time, which catches people out in summer with a complex assembly they completed comfortably in spring.
Clamping pressure and squeeze-out
Even, moderate pressure with a thin line of squeeze-out along the joint is the target. Excessive pressure squeezes out too much glue and starves the joint, which is a genuine failure mode rather than a myth.
Wiping squeeze-out with a damp cloth is easier than chiselling it later, but glue that soaks into surrounding grain shows up as a pale patch under finish. Letting it gel and paring it off cleanly is the approach most finishers prefer.
