IPSC stages are not shot against a par time. The timer records how long you take, and that elapsed time becomes the denominator of your score: hit factor is total points divided by time in seconds[1]. Stage points are then awarded in proportion to the highest hit factor achieved by anyone on that stage, which is why a match is a comparison rather than an absolute.

Because time is a divisor rather than a limit, the trade between speed and accuracy is arithmetic you can actually do. Dropping from an A to a C on a Comstock stage typically costs points that must be recovered by shaving real seconds off the run, and on a short stage those seconds are not available. This is why experienced shooters describe the sport as accuracy at speed rather than speed with acceptable accuracy.

Hit factor, and what it rewards

Hit factor is points divided by seconds. A run scoring 50 points in 5 seconds gives a hit factor of 10; the same 50 points in 6.25 seconds gives 8. The shooter with the highest hit factor on a stage takes full stage points, and everyone else scores in proportion to theirs.

The consequence people miss is that the value of a second depends on the stage. On a 12-round stage worth 60 points, one second is worth far more proportionally than on a 32-round field course, which is why stage planning matters more on short stages than long ones.

The commands, and when the clock starts

The range officer's sequence — make ready, are you ready, standby, then the start signal — is fixed, and the standby period before the beep is deliberately variable so it cannot be anticipated. Your time runs from the start signal to your last shot.

Training with a random delay rather than a fixed one matters for exactly that reason. A shooter who has grooved a two-second anticipation is reacting to their own count rather than to the signal, and it shows up as a slower first shot when the delay changes.
