Marathon pace is the intensity you intend to hold for 42.2 km, and the reason it needs practising is that it feels absurdly easy for the first hour. Runners who have not rehearsed it consistently drift faster in the opening kilometres, where the effort cost of going too quick is invisible and the consequence arrives two hours later.
Marathon pace runs of forty-five to ninety minutes within a long run are the standard way to train it. Long enough to make the pace familiar and to expose fuelling problems, short enough that the session does not need a week of recovery. Full-distance rehearsal is not necessary and is usually counterproductive.
The first 10K decides more races than the last
Almost every marathon that falls apart does so because of pace banked too early. Running the first 10K twenty seconds per kilometre fast feels like nothing and costs several minutes at the end, because the glycogen and fatigue penalty is non-linear.
A useful discipline is to make the first 5K feel deliberately, uncomfortably slow. Runners who do this almost never regret it; runners who do the opposite almost always do.
Negative splitting is easier said than done
Running the second half faster than the first is the theoretically optimal strategy and it is achieved by a minority of runners. The realistic version is an even split with the acceptance that the last 10K will feel far harder at the same pace.
Aiming for a slight negative split is a good way to produce an even one, which is a better outcome than aiming for even and producing a positive one.
Set the target from evidence
Goal pace should come from recent race results and completed training rather than from a number that sounds good. A half marathon time is the most useful predictor most runners have, and long run pace and weekly volume qualify it.
If your marathon pace is one you have never held for an hour in training, it is not your marathon pace.
