Memorial Day is a US federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May each year. It honours the men and women who have died in military service. Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer in the United States, making it one of the most anticipated long weekends of the year for travel, cookouts, and outdoor events. The date falls between May 25 and May 31 depending on the year.
As the gateway to summer, Memorial Day weekend is the most-booked travel weekend of the late spring. Airfares, hotel rates, and campsite availability all change dramatically in the weeks before the holiday. Knowing the exact date and days remaining helps with early booking.
It is not the same holiday as Veterans Day
Memorial Day honours those who died in military service. Veterans Day, in November, honours all who served. The two are frequently conflated, and 'happy Memorial Day' lands badly with people for whom the day is about a specific person.
The distinction is worth knowing before the day rather than during it. Armed Forces Day in May is a third observance again, honouring those currently serving.
The date is a rule, and it moved
Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, ranging from the 25th to the 31st. It was previously observed on 30 May regardless of weekday, and was moved to a Monday by federal legislation creating a three-day weekend — a change that has been criticised on the grounds that it shifted the emphasis toward the weekend.
The National Moment of Remembrance is at 3pm local time on the day, which is the part most likely to be missed by anyone treating it purely as a long weekend.
The unofficial start of summer
Memorial Day weekend functions as summer's opening bracket in the US, as Labor Day does for its close. Pools open, travel volumes spike, and the retail calendar turns over.
For planning purposes that makes it one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Roads on the Friday and the Monday are predictably bad, and prices for the weekend are set accordingly.
