Veterans Day is observed on November 11 each year in the United States and honours all US military veterans — both living and deceased — who have served in the armed forces. It corresponds to Armistice Day and Remembrance Day observed in the UK, Canada, and Australia on the same date, marking the end of World War I hostilities at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The countdown tracks the exact days remaining until November 11 in your local time.
Veterans Day falls shortly before Thanksgiving, making November one of the most event-dense months in the US calendar. Community ceremonies, parades, and veteran support events all require advance planning. Many retailers offer veterans discounts and need to prepare promotional campaigns in advance.
A fixed date, and it stayed fixed on purpose
11 November, marking the armistice that ended the First World War at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It was briefly moved to a Monday in the early 1970s under the same legislation that moved several other holidays, and moved back after objections that the specific date was the point.
That makes it unusual among US federal holidays: it does not float to create a long weekend, and when 11 November falls at a weekend the federal observance shifts while the date itself does not.
It honours the living
Veterans Day is for all who served, living and dead. Memorial Day in May is specifically for those who died in service. Conflating the two is common and lands badly, and thanking a veteran on Memorial Day is the version people notice most.
The corollary is that Veterans Day is an appropriate day for thanks in a way Memorial Day is not, which is roughly the opposite of how many people treat the pair.
The same date elsewhere
The UK and Commonwealth mark Remembrance Day on the same date, with Remembrance Sunday on the nearest Sunday, and the two-minute silence at 11am. France and Belgium mark Armistice Day.
So 11 November is widely observed and observed differently. For anything scheduled internationally that week it is worth checking which countries treat it as a public holiday — some do and some do not.
