Three minutes is the standard rest for heavy compound work. It is long enough for most of the phosphocreatine recovery that near-maximal efforts depend on, and it is the interval at which a lifter can repeat a heavy set at the same load and quality rather than grinding a degraded version of it.
The phosphocreatine system, which fuels efforts of a few seconds to about half a minute, recovers on a curve — substantially within the first couple of minutes and more slowly after that. Three minutes captures most of the useful recovery without the session becoming interminable. Five minutes captures slightly more, at real cost in time.
Longer rest does not cost you growth
The persistent worry that resting three minutes makes a session less effective for hypertrophy does not hold up well. Longer rests allow more total volume at higher loads, and volume at load is the strongest driver of growth we know of.
What longer rest does cost is time. That is a real constraint and a legitimate reason to shorten rest on accessory work — but it is a scheduling decision, not a training-effect one.
Three minutes feels much longer than it is
Lifters consistently underestimate elapsed rest, and a timed three minutes usually feels excessive to someone used to resting by feel. That gap is exactly why timing it matters.
It is also why the interval gets quietly compressed as a session goes on and fatigue makes waiting unpleasant — precisely when the rest is most needed.
Use the time
Three minutes is long enough to be useful: setting up the next load, mobility work for a non-competing area, or simply breathing rather than checking a phone. Filling it with a demanding superset defeats the purpose.
Light non-competing accessory work — the classic pairing of a heavy lower body lift with easy upper body mobility — is a reasonable way to use the time without compromising the recovery it exists for.
