Max hangs train maximum finger strength: a ten-second hang at near-maximal intensity, followed by a full three-minute rest, repeated four to six times. The long rest is the defining feature — the goal is that every hang is as hard as the first, which cannot happen if the forearms are still fatigued.

Ten seconds is long enough to be a genuine strength effort and short enough that the whole hang can be performed at high intensity. Longer hangs necessarily drop the load and drift toward endurance work, which is what repeaters are for. If you can hang for twenty seconds, the edge or the weight is wrong.

Intensity is the whole protocol

The target is a load you could hold for roughly twelve to thirteen seconds, hung for ten. That leaves a small margin and keeps the effort genuinely near-maximal without going to failure.

Going to failure on a hangboard is a poor trade: it adds injury risk and fatigue without adding much stimulus, and it compromises the remaining hangs in the session.

Quality over volume

Four to six hangs is a complete session. There is no benefit to a seventh hang at reduced intensity, because the adaptation being chased is a high-load one and a submaximal hang does not deliver it.

The session is also short — about fifteen minutes including rests — which surprises people expecting a workout. It should be done fresh, before climbing rather than after.

Adding weight

Once you can complete the session comfortably at bodyweight on your chosen edge, add weight in small increments rather than dropping to a smaller edge. Weight is a linear, measurable variable; edge depth is a step change that often jumps too far.

Track the weight and the edge. A session log is what turns hangboarding from a vague habit into a progression, and it is also what tells you when to stop adding.
