Repeaters are the standard hangboard protocol for finger endurance: seven seconds hanging, three seconds off, repeated six times to make one set. The three-second rest is too short to recover and is not meant to — it lets blood back into the forearm briefly so the set can continue, which is what makes the protocol an endurance stimulus rather than a strength one.

Six repeaters take one minute and the inter-set rest is three minutes, which is the part people cut. The set is short enough to feel manageable and the accumulated load across five or six sets is what produces adaptation. Cutting the inter-set rest turns a targeted session into general forearm fatigue.

Progress the edge, not the timer

The protocol stays fixed. What changes is the edge depth, the added or removed weight, and the grip position. Progressing from a 20 mm edge to an 18 mm edge is a real step; changing seven seconds to nine seconds is a different exercise.

For most climbers the sequence is: bodyweight on a comfortable edge, then added weight on that edge, then a smaller edge at bodyweight. Removing weight with a pulley is the standard way in for climbers who cannot yet hang the target edge.

Fingers adapt slower than everything else

Tendons and pulleys remodel more slowly than muscle, which is why finger injuries in climbing so often follow a period of feeling strong. The strength arrives before the connective tissue is ready for it.

Hangboarding is generally not recommended for climbers in their first year or two, and progressing by small increments over months rather than weeks is the conservative approach that keeps people climbing. If a session produces sharp pain in a finger joint, stop that session — not the next one.

Grip positions

Half crimp and open hand are the two positions worth training; full crimp loads the pulleys hardest and is trained cautiously, if at all, on a hangboard.

Keeping the position consistent throughout the set matters more than the grip you choose. A set that starts as half crimp and drifts to full crimp under fatigue is training the thing you did not intend to load.
