Campus boarding trains contact strength and upper-body power through dynamic movement on rungs without feet. A set is short — a ladder or a sequence of bumps lasting ten to twenty seconds — and the rest is long, typically three minutes, because the quality of the movement is the entire point and it degrades fast.
Twenty seconds covers a full ladder or a bump sequence. Beyond that, the movement slows and the training stimulus changes from power to fatigue resistance, which the campus board is a poor and dangerous tool for. Three minutes of rest is what allows the next set to be explosive.
The injury caveat is not decoration
Campus boarding involves high, rapidly-applied loads on fingers with no feet to share them, and it has a well-earned reputation for causing pulley and elbow injuries. It is an advanced tool for climbers with years of load history in their fingers.
The common failure is a climber with the power to do it and not the tendon history to absorb it. If you are unsure whether you are ready, you are not — and there is no climbing goal that campus boarding is the only route to.
Warm up much more than feels necessary
A campus session needs a long, progressive warm-up: easy climbing, then progressively harder pulling, then a few submaximal campus moves before anything explosive. Twenty minutes is not excessive.
The first set of a session is the most common injury moment precisely because it feels fine. Cold fingers can produce the force; the connective tissue just cannot absorb it yet.
Stop early, always
Six sets is plenty and four is often better. The session should end while the movement still looks fast and controlled, not when it stops.
Any hint of elbow or finger pain ends the session immediately. Elbow tendinopathy from campus boarding is measured in months of lost climbing, which makes the trade against one extra set obvious.
Common set formats. Rest ratios are long by design — power work degrades quickly and degraded power work is where injuries happen.
