Think-pair-share is a discussion structure devised by Frank Lyman in the early 1980s. Students think alone, then discuss in pairs, then contribute to the whole class. Each stage does something the next cannot: individual thinking generates an idea, the pair tests it in low-stakes conversation, and the share stage exposes it to the room with the confidence of having already said it once.

The silent thinking stage is the one classrooms skip, and skipping it collapses the protocol into ordinary paired discussion. Thirty seconds feels long in a quiet room, which is precisely why a timer helps — it holds the silence past the point a teacher's instinct is to fill it. When the protocol is the wrong tool

Think-pair-share suits questions with more than one defensible answer. For a question with a single correct response, pairing mostly gives students a chance to confirm each other's error before it reaches you.

It also struggles with genuinely new material, since students have nothing to think with yet. Use it after input rather than instead of it — the structure organises understanding, it does not create it.
