In a gallery walk, work is displayed around the room and small groups rotate between stations on a fixed signal. It gets students out of their seats, exposes everyone to everyone else's work, and turns a task that would be a silent read into a discussion.

The timing is arithmetic before it is pedagogy. Divide the usable lesson time by the number of stations, then subtract the rotation time — which is the part people forget. Thirty seconds per move across six stations is three minutes gone, and a plan that ignores it either overruns or leaves the last station unvisited.

Budget the rotation, not just the station

Moving thirty students between stations takes twenty to forty seconds, more if the room is tight or the groups need reforming. Across six rotations that is two to four minutes of lesson.

An interval timer with a rest phase handles this cleanly: work time at the station, rest time to move. The signal does the managing, which means you are not the one saying "move on" six times.

Give stations a task, not just a display
