Station-based practicals let a class share limited equipment: small groups work through different experiments and rotate, so one set of apparatus serves everyone. The timing problem is harder than an ordinary rotation because each station has setup, work and reset built into it, and the group after you inherits whatever state you leave.
Budget three blocks per station, not one. Ten minutes of work needs a minute or two either side for setting up and resetting, so a nominally ten-minute station occupies closer to thirteen. Across four stations that difference is twelve minutes — the gap between finishing calmly and running out of lesson with equipment still on the benches.
Reset is the station's real deadline
A group that leaves a station mid-experiment costs the next group their whole slot. Building an explicit reset phase into the rotation — a minute where nobody starts anything new — is what stops the delay compounding around the room.
An interval timer with a visible rest phase does this without you policing it. Students see the reset coming, which changes it from an instruction into a routine.
Leave the last block for the room
Whole-class cleanup at the end needs its own time, and it needs more than people allow. Five minutes for a class of thirty putting away glassware, chemicals and electrical equipment is realistic; two is not.
Work it out at the start, not when the bell is imminent. A practical that finishes with a rushed cleanup is where breakages and spills happen, which is a safety issue rather than a tidiness one.
Safety briefing time is not rotation time
The briefing before a practical belongs outside the rotation arithmetic entirely. Whatever your institution requires — hazards, protective equipment, what to do about a spill — comes before the first timer starts, not inside the first station.
It is also worth setting the expectation that the reset signal is non-negotiable for safety reasons rather than timekeeping ones. A group that ignores it leaves apparatus in an unknown state for whoever arrives next.
