A BJJ sparring timer structures live rolling sessions with clear round boundaries and enforced rest periods. The default 5-minute rounds with 1-minute rest follows IBJJF adult competition standards. Eight rounds totals 40 minutes of rolling — appropriate for a dedicated sparring session. The rest interval serves double duty: cardiovascular recovery and partner rotation, the standard format in most BJJ academies.
Five minutes is long enough for meaningful positional battles — attempts to establish guard, passes, sweeps, and submission attempts — while remaining short enough to maintain full intensity for 6–8 rounds. The 1-minute rest allows heart rate to partially recover (to ~130–140 BPM) without full cardiovascular reset, maintaining training stimulus.
