Split time is the elapsed time between the first and second shot in a controlled pair. Competitive USPSA and IDPA shooters aim for split times of 0.15–0.25 seconds for A-zone hits at 7 yards. Training with a 1-second par window forces focus on the second shot trigger press, which is what determines split time consistency. The 9-second reset allows a full reset of stance, grip, and mental focus between repetitions.
A 1-second par for two shots (draw already established, both shots within 1 second) is an achievable intermediate goal that forces genuine speed without sacrificing accuracy. For beginners practicing split times only (no draw), starting with a 0.5-second par for the second shot press is more appropriate.
