The 2,000 metre erg test is rowing's benchmark, and it is scored by split — time per 500 metres — rather than by total time. Four splits make the piece, so the arithmetic is direct: your average split multiplied by four is your finish time, and holding a split is the entire tactical problem.
Six to eight minutes for most people is a genuinely awful duration: long enough that it is aerobically limited, short enough that it hurts throughout. There is no comfortable phase, which is why 2k pacing errors are so punishing — a fast first 500 does not leave a hard finish, it leaves a collapse.
Fly and die is the classic error
Adrenaline makes the first 500 feel easy, and rowers routinely go out five or six seconds per split faster than they can hold. The third 500 is then catastrophic, and the total is worse than an even piece by a wide margin.
The reliable approach is to set a target split, hold it exactly through the first 1,500, and spend whatever is left in the last 500. A piece that finishes with a sprint was paced correctly; one that finishes with a survival grind was not.
Split arithmetic is worth internalising
Each second on your average split costs four seconds on the total. That makes the trade very legible: taking two seconds off your target split for the first 500 gains eight seconds only if you can hold it, and loses far more if you cannot.
It also means small consistent improvements matter. Half a second on the average split is two seconds on the piece, which is a large margin in rowing terms.
Rate and split are separate
Stroke rate is not the same as speed. A higher rate with weaker drive produces the same or worse split at greater metabolic cost, and rowers under pressure tend to raise the rate rather than the power.
Holding the rate steady and pushing harder is almost always the better response to a slipping split. Rate creep in the third 500 is a reliable sign the piece is going wrong.
