Christmas Countdown Timer

Postal services publish last-recommended dates for Christmas delivery, and they fall considerably earlier than most people plan for — international surface mail can close in November, and domestic first class typically closes several days before the 25th.

Those dates are published annually and shift, so checking the current year's rather than assuming last year's is the practical step. Missing them is the most common Christmas timing failure and the least recoverable.

Much of Europe marks the main celebration on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day, with the meal and gifts on the evening of the 24th. Orthodox churches following the Julian calendar celebrate on 7 January.

For families spread across those traditions the countdown target is genuinely different, which is worth settling before it is assumed. This one counts to 25 December.

A large frozen turkey needs several days of refrigerator thawing — roughly 24 hours per 2 kg — which puts the deadline well before Christmas Eve. That is the item most often left too late, and it cannot be fixed on the morning.

Ordering fresh has its own deadline, with popular sizes at good butchers going weeks ahead. Either route needs a decision in early December rather than in the final week.
